Onside’s Generation Isolation Report 2025, based on responses from 5,035 young people in England aged 11–18, offers the clearest picture yet of how young people are spending the 85% of their time outside school. Conducted by OnSide in partnership with YouGov, the research shines a spotlight on what young people say they need to feel connected, supported, and able to thrive.
And the message is loud and clear: young people crave real-life connection.
Despite living in a world increasingly shaped by digital interaction, young people are seeking meaningful, in-person experiences that technology simply can’t replace.
What the research tells us
- 39% of young people have turned to AI chatbots for company, advice, or support, yet only 6% say they trust AI more than another person.
- 53% say technology makes staying in touch with friends easier, but nearly half (49%) feel most connected when spending time together face-to-face.
- When asked what one thing would improve their lives outside school, young people were clear:
more affordable leisure activities, safe places to socialise, and in-person events and activities.
Young people want spaces where they can meet new people, feel safe, and access trusted support – and they want these spaces in their local community.
Why this matters for South Bristol
As digital dependence rises, many young people in Bristol lack accessible, welcoming places to go outside school. The Generation Isolation findings highlight the urgent need for real-world spaces where young people can belong, build friendships, and talk to trusted adults.

Opening in South Bristol in 2026, 224 Youth Zone will be a dedicated, state-of-the-art youth centre open seven days a week. It will provide:
- Affordable access (£5 annual membership, 50p per session)
- Over 20 activities every night
- Warm, skilled youth workers offering consistent support
- A safe, inclusive space for young people to be themselves
- Opportunities to build confidence, make new friends, and feel connected offline
